Online Education Fair Promote Taiwan Education Despite COVID-19

Thailand
The Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand and the Taiwan Education Center in Thailand (TEC) adopted new methods to inform Thai students about Taiwan’s higher education. Since April 29, the Education Division and TEC have conducted seven online video conferences using the Cisco Webex Meeting app, giving Thai students an opportunity to learn more about Taiwan and Taiwan universities from Thai students and alumni studying in Taiwan, and university representatives stationed in Thailand.

On June 19, 2020, for example, the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand and the Taiwan Education Center in Thailand (TEC) co-hosted an online video conference, during which Ms. Panida Phanun, a Thai student taking the Master Degree of Business Administration program at National Pingtung University shared details of her experiences of life and studying in Taiwan, and answered questions from Thai students online.

Since 2018, the Education Division has also been promoting Taiwan higher education on Facebook Live by inviting Thai students and alumni of Taiwan universities to participate in live interviews. The outbreak of the pandemic put a temporary halt to live interviews but schools and universities in Thailand have just reopened.

Malaysia
The Federation of Alumni Associations of Taiwan Universities, Malaysia (FAATUM) has successfully held a virtual Education Fair, and webinars. FAATUM began using online education fairs, counseling sessions, and talks to encourage Malaysian students to undertake further study in Taiwan in April and it invited representatives of universities and colleges in Taiwan to share information about their institution in the webinar sessions.

Students and parents can obtain the latest information on Taiwan’s education environment and details about universities and colleges in Taiwan by viewing these webinars. The audience can leave comments or ask questions that the representatives can reply to immediately during the live interactive webinars. According to FAATUM, the webinars have already been viewed more than 100,000 times since April.

Dato’ Ting Siew Haw, chairperson of FAATUM, spoke at one of the webinars and encouraged young Malaysian to do further study in Taiwan. He acknowledged the successful effort of the Taiwanese government and people to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and thus create a safe and healthy study environment option for international students.

On June 28, Dr. Charlin Chang, the director of the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia spoke about the uniqueness of Taiwan’s education environment, especially its rapid development of technological and innovative education that has dramatically transformed the philosophy of education.

Giving FAATUM due credit, she said that the webinars are an example of the current development and important role of internet technology in Taiwan’s higher education industry and they meet the preferences of the young generation. She thanked FAATUM for creating this innovative way to encourage collaboration of education between Malaysia and Taiwan, despite the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesia
On June 20, the Taiwan Education Center in Surabaya at Asia University hosted the Taiwan Higher Education Fair Online 2020, in conjunction with the Taiwan Education Center in Jakarta and the Taiwan Education Center in Yogyakarta, and with the support and assistance of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Trade Office, Jakarta, Indonesia (TETO).

The Taiwan Education Center in Jakarta, for example, has built a partnership with the Indonesia Student Association in Taiwan which promoted the Fair on its Instagram page. Representatives of 27 universities in Taiwan participated.

In fact having the fair online made participating much more accessible for Indonesians on the island of Java, and also for Indonesians in other locations. It went for about 12 hours from 8.30 am West Indonesia Time via YouTube Live, and turned out to be fun as well as informative. More than 1,200 students actively participated and it’s had more than 2,500 viewers.

The online fair was divided into three main parts, coordinated by the Taiwan Education Centers in Surabaya, Jakarta, and Yogyakarta respectively. Grace Ou, the Director of the Education Division at TETO told the participating students about the commitment of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to continue providing support to Indonesian students to study in Taiwan, with its Taiwan Scholarship program for degree students, and its Huayu Enrichment Scholarship program, for Chinese language students. Representatives of 27 universities in Taiwan participated throughout the day and a Q & A session after each Taiwan university spokesperson gave participants a valuable opportunity to ask for and hear more details.

This first online Taiwan Higher Education Fair was a great success. It ended with a session led by an Asia University team talking about scholarship opportunities to undertake master’s degree and doctoral degree programs there and giving away some “door” prizes for some lucky participants.
