Taipei, June 10 (CNA) National Taiwan University (NTU) jumped three places to reach the number 66 position in the latest world university rankings released on Wednesday by a British education network.

It marks the highest position ever achieved by NTU in the 2021 QS World University Rankings compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd., a global information provider on specialist higher education, career information and solutions.

NTU was the only Taiwanese school to be listed among the top 100 in the rankings, remaining the country's highest-rated university in the annual survey.

With an overall score of 67.5, NTU tied with Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina in the annual rankings.

The rise in ranking for NTU could be attributed to better performance by its staff, excellence in research and its efforts to promote internationalization and innovative teaching and to enhance the school's global visibility and influence in the academic realm, according to the school.

A total of 12 universities from Taiwan are in the top 500 rankings, including National Tsing Hua University (168th), National Taiwan Normal University (331st) and National Taipei University of Technology (488th).

National Taipei University of Technology had the biggest improvement, rising from the 511th-520th bracket in the 2020 survey and entering the top 500 in the latest rankings for the first time.

The QS rankings are based on four key pillars -- research, teaching, employability and internationalization.

Six indicators are used to assess performance -- academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), faculty to student ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), proportion of international students (5 percent) and proportion of international faculty (5 percent).
